Written at the beginning of the second century A.D., Plutarch’s Lives is a brilliant social history of the ancient world by one of the greatest biographers and moralists of all time. In what is by far his most famous and influential work, Plutarch reveals the character and personality of his subjects and how they led ultimately to tragedy or victory. Richly anecdotal and full of detail, Volume I contains profiles and comparisons of Romulus and Theseus, Numa and Lycurgus, Fabius and Pericles, and many more powerful figures of ancient Greece and Rome.Plutarch later named, upon becoming a Roman citizen, Lucius Mestrius Plutarchus, was a Greek historian, biographer, and essayist, known primarily for his Parallel Lives and Moralia.

This is a great translation and the formatting is pretty good. As for the content, any nation would be very fortunate if its leaders had read this book. Sadly I don't think many read this any more. I am sure that America's founding fathers read it, as the book is filled with political and social concepts that are selectively embodied in our constitution. It is worth anyone's time to at the very least browse through the book.Product details

Plutarch Lives Volume I Plutarch 9781546967675 Books Reviews
Amazing classic. Dr. Rufus Fears uses it extensively to develop his ancient biographies in the Great Courses Series with The Learning Co.. I recommend all his courses highly, and a perfect introduction to Plutarch. They are available on .
Always a great read. Nice to have it on a .
OKAY.
It is amazing the details Plutarch went into. One needs to know some history however , I always am impressed with his information.
I have been reading Lives for about 50 years. My uncle had the books in his library. I would sit in his living room surrounded by his noisy brood. In chaos I was totally absorbed and I still am today. After the Bible and Shakespeare this is probably the most important book in my library.
If you enjoy contemporary Roman histories like Livy, Tacitus, Suetonius, etc., this book (all the volumes) is essential, despite the fact that it technically is a biography rather than a history. It is largely on several of chapters in Plutarch's "Lives" that the Patrician characters (and Pompey and Agrippa, who technically were Plebeians) in the greatest TV show of all time, BBC/HBO's "Rome," were based.
I've been aware of this book for many, many years and knew it was 'one of those books every educated person should read.' It's reputation intimidated me. It shouldn't have. This is an enjoyable read. The biographies of these Greek and Roman luminaries are engaging. Now I'm starting volume II.
